Savinelli Punto Oro Churchwarden Natural 54-SavPOroSm 901 SOLD
Punto Oro
The “classic” pipe that made the name “Savinelli” famous all over the world thanks to the high quality briar and to the ultimate care in production. The Gold Dot is the stamp of excellence.
The history of the Churchwarden pipe style is traced to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Some churchwarden pipes can be as long as 16 inches (40 cm). The bowl is out of the direct line of vision of a book or TV. In German the style is referred to as "Lesepfeife" or "reading pipe". In addition, smoke is well away from your face. More important the length of the stem gives the smoke plenty of time to cool.
The 901 shape from Savinelli has an oval bowl with rounded rim, very comfortable in the hand.
And just look at the grain, plenty of hard briar wood with just enough softer wood to form a beautiful pattern. Flame Grain, flaring almost straight up the bowl from BirdsEye at the base of the bowl and under the shank. Around the front of the bowl, the the grain hugs the shape finishing in a misty BirdsEye on the side. The colour too emphasizes the lovely grain pattern.
Just what you need for a relaxed smoke with your book, or watching TV.

Savinelli Punto Oro Classic, Smooth Natural King-size pipe 54-SavPOroSm677Ks SOLD
Punto Oro
This shape 677 is a Savinelli original, reminiscent of a bent Rhodesian, a pleasure to hold. The large bowl is comfortable with a bevelled rim; the oval shank provides the touch of elegance.
The grain adds to the elegance. Flame Grain, flaring diagonally from the BirdsEye under the shank across the one side and the front of the bowl, and partially up the other side. Where the two flames meet, on each side, you'll find swirling BirdsEye.
A pleasure just to look at.
The colouring is perfect for the lovely grain pattern.

Savinelli Punto Oro, Smooth 6mm Pipe, Reject
54-SavPOroSm626
Punto Oro
The “classic” pipe that made the name “Savinelli” famous all over the world thanks to the high quality briar and to the ultimate care in production. The Gold Dot is the stamp of excellence.
How shattering to find, just as the final stages of preparation were reached, a tiny surface flaw that required a filling.
Too late to downgrade, all that could be done was to stamp the pipe with R for rejected, and offer it to a a small distributor at half price.
We were the fortunate distributor - you are the fortunate pipe smoker.

Stanwell – the current situation
Stanwell - the sad news
Stanwell was bought by Scandinavian Tobacco Group who moved production to Italy, and who have now decided that they won’t be supplying smaller markets any longer. They will concentrate on the USA.
We contacted Stanwell to ask could we place a last order for the 9mm shapes we usually get.
The reply:
“Unfortunately, when the decision was made for the brand to transition from Denmark to the United States the conversation was to reduce and eliminate certain lines, several of which you are requesting. 9mm pipes are not wildly popular in the US therefore again we are selling through what is remaining.”
and
“With the transition of the brand to the US we will not be producing additional units at this time.”
I received the impression that they would be opening an office in the USA, but that the manufacture would remain in Europe. No more recent confirmation either way.
On an Internet search I see that Chris, who worked for Stanwell for many years, confirms that the USA market will take precedence; that other markets, including Europe, won’t be serviced.
This means that Stanwell pipes are now discontinued except for the American market.
We have been closely associated with Stanwell for many years. We even had a range of pipes made for us by Stanwell in 1976. We called it “Roskilde” after the nearby town where Paul Stanwell took us to visit the Cathedral.
I remember vividly Colin and I sitting in the office of Mr Paul Stanwell many years ago, doing the English text for their Bamboo Shank pipe. And a lunch in Umhlanga Rocks (I think) when Paul Stanwell visited South Africa.
it really feels like the end of an era for us
